MERCEDES-BENZ GROUP

5-STAR APP FOR HR MANAGEMENT

How self-service systems make it easier to access key staff services

iteratec is working with Mercedes-Benz Group AG (formerly Daimler AG) to develop an app that allows staff to easily carry out a wide range of HR-related tasks themselves. The key challenge here is: how do you build an app that integrates many existing systems whilst also being popular with staff?

All HR services in one app

The my|work app is aimed at more than 100,000 employees in Germany. As a central point of access for all employees’ individual matters, the app complements a wide range of previously decentralised services and brings together a wealth of relevant HR information in one place. Users therefore have direct access via their smartphones to functions such as personal time recording and management, or payslips.

Self-service solutions are only as good as the user experience they provide. That is why high usability has been the central focus throughout the development of the my|work app. Instead of using a cross-platform framework, the development team has therefore adopted a native approach from the outset. The aim is to use the app to create a lightweight and intuitive user experience, similar to that which users are familiar with from iOS and Android applications. To this end, iteratec is working with the client not only to implement a UX-optimised user interface, but also to adapt the underlying workflows.

Even the best self-service system is of no use if nobody wants to use it. That is why, right from the start, the focus has been on the users and ensuring they enjoy using the app. This was the only way to achieve the strategic objectives associated with the project.

From distributed portals to a native user experience

To provide these self-service features, the my|work app integrates various existing enterprise applications. To ensure a native user experience despite the differing architectures of the existing back-end systems, the development team devises creative solutions when integrating the existing services: For example, many of the existing applications are integrated using native elements, whilst in other instances, links to other applications are provided without users having to log in again. This ensures continuity in usability.

Turning a collection of individual portals into an app that people are keen to use requires more than just technical interfaces: it requires a deep understanding of the workflows and the underlying business logic.
