iteratec is collaborating with Mercedes-Benz Group AG (formerly Daimler AG) to develop an app that allows employees to easily handle a wide range of HR-related tasks on their own. The key challenge here is: How do you build an app that integrates many existing systems while also being popular among employees?
The my|work app is designed for more than 100,000 employees in Germany. As a central hub for all employee-related matters, the app consolidates a wide range of previously scattered services and brings together relevant HR information in one place. Users can thus access features such as personal time tracking and management, or pay stubs, directly via their smartphones.
Self-service solutions are only as good as the user experience they provide. That is why high usability has been a central focus throughout the development of the my|work app. The development team therefore opted for a native approach over a cross-platform framework from the very beginning. The goal is to create a lightweight and intuitive user experience with the app, similar to what users are accustomed to with iOS and Android applications. To achieve this, iteratec is working with the client not only to implement a UX-optimized user interface but also to adapt the underlying workflows.

Even the best self-service system is useless if no one wants to use it. That’s why, from the very beginning, the focus has been on the users and their enjoyment of using the app. This was the only way to achieve the strategic goals associated with the project.
To provide self-service features, the my|work app integrates various existing enterprise applications. To enable a native user experience despite the differing architectures of the existing backend systems, the development team finds creative solutions when integrating the existing services: Many of the existing applications are integrated using native elements, while in other places, users are offered jump-off points to other applications without having to log in again. This ensures continuity in usability.
Turning a collection of individual portals into an app that people enjoy using requires more than just technical interfaces: it requires a deep understanding of workflows and the underlying business logic.
