The electronic consignment note (eCMR)
Digital transport documents – quick to integrate, immediate benefits

eCMR: the new standard for the digital consignment note

The electronic consignment note (eCMR) is the digital version of the CMR consignment note, which has been in use in international road freight transport since 2025. It replaces paper documents with a legally compliant, interoperable and automatable solution.

As a member of the Open Logistics Foundation, iteratec helped develop the eCMR. Together, we have developed a uniform and open standard based on open source, which is available free of charge for unrestricted use and customisation.

Benefits of the eCMR

Faster processing, less paperwork. The eCMR replaces the traditional consignment note with a digital, legally compliant solution. Thanks to standardised interfaces, it is compatible with existing systems and can be integrated directly into your transport management system.

Efficiency & Time Savings

Faster processing and handling of lorries – in some cases, time savings of up to 60%. Digital confirmation of goods receipt also significantly speeds up the invoicing process.

Transparency & Traceability

The eCMR provides accurate information on the current location of goods at all times. Greater clarity, better planning and improved customer communication.

Cost savings

No printing or archiving costs, and no need to transport physical documents. Depending on the case, savings of between €1 and €4.50 per document can be achieved (e.g. at Rhenus Logistics).

Fewer errors, more control

Digital processes are less prone to errors, traceable and standardised. This ensures consistently high data quality.

Compatibility & Standardisation

The eCMR is an industry-wide de facto standard that replaces siloed solutions and overcomes system boundaries.

Legal certainty

The solution meets all the requirements of the 2008 eCMR Protocol and the eIDAS Regulation, with verified technical and legal implementation.

Stronger, more resilient supply chains

Automated, streamlined processes make your supply chains more resilient and flexible.

A valuable data foundation for new services

Structured data collection creates a new level of transparency that you can use for process analysis, forecasting and additional digital services.
