Anyone looking to pay for parking in Munich no longer needs to search for change or find a parking meter. Since 2018, the HandyParken München app has been available, allowing users to purchase parking tickets digitally. A concept that works: Nearly two-thirds of all parking tickets in Munich are now purchased via the HandyParken München app. iteratec supported the launch, has been operating the application ever since, and continues to develop the system in collaboration with Stadtwerke München for the City of Munich. Through multimodal features, the app connects drivers with public transportation and car-sharing services.
With nearly 1,000,000 users, HandyParken München now plays a vital role in the mobility landscape for Munich residents, commuters, and tourists. This success comes with various challenges: the service must be available 24/7 and function reliably on smartphones of varying ages and software versions. iteratec’s task is to develop excellent software and reliably deliver the HandyParken service to its users.
The HandyParken system was launched in October 2018 together with Munich's Lord Mayor, on schedule and within budget. Since then, an iteratec team has ensured smooth operation, proactive maintenance, and customer-focused continuous development. Our focus is primarily on usability, resilience, and availability. Necessary technical adjustments, such as the migration of the backend systems from an on-premises data center to the Microsoft Azure Cloud, are carried out seamlessly and without compromising service quality.
Police and Munich's municipal traffic enforcement agency also check parking tickets digitally, using an enforcement app. Features such as license plate scanning and the ability to print tickets via a Bluetooth printer enable enforcement officers to conduct modern parking enforcement and issue citations in compliance with legal requirements. iteratec automated previously manual process steps, thereby reducing the workload on administrative staff and alleviating staff shortages.

HandyParken München has grown into a platform that enables multimodal use of Munich’s transportation network. New features show users not only accessible and resident parking spaces, but also park-and-ride facilities, EV charging stations, no-stopping zones, construction sites, and public transportation and car-sharing options in Munich.
The successful, cross-organizational collaboration with stakeholders in Stadtwerke München’s customer service, municipal traffic enforcement, the City of Munich’s Mobility Department, and the Munich Police Headquarters is paying off: More than 60% of parking tickets are now purchased digitally. The apps have received excellent ratings in the Apple and Google App Stores and won several awards, including the Top Digitalizer Award 2021 and the German App Award in 2024 and 2025.
